Toques for Standard and Mid-gauges

toque

Standard Gauge:
This pattern is written for 4 ply yarns knitting on a standard gauge machine to a gauge of 7 sts and 10 rows per inch. Set the tension dial to the correct tension for the yarn chosen. Slight differences in gauge are not important in this hat pattern.

The pattern is written for toddler, child/youth, and adult sizes (17.5, 21, 24"). The toques require 70 to 120 g. of yarn depending on size, style, and type of yarn.

Doubled Toque:
1 • With waste yarn, cast on every other needle over 122 (146, 170) needles. Knit 10 rows with waste yarn and 1 row with ravel cord.
2 • COR. With main yarn, knit 5 rows at MT-2 and 5 rows at MT.
3 • RC000. Bring empty needles to WP. Knit 64 (70, 76) rows at MT.
4 • Transfer to 1x1 rib or transfer every other stitch for mock rib. Knit 64 (70, 76) rows at MT-2. RC128 (140, 152). Transfer back to stocking st. For mock rib, bring empty needles back to WP.
5 • Knit 64 (70, 76) rows for the body of the hat. Use the tension suitable for the stitch chosen. The body may be knit in stocking stitch with or without stripes, an all-over or centered fairisle, tuck or lace with the knit side as the right side. If using the purl side as the right side, turn the work before and after knitting the body. To center a pattern, knit 15 rows in stocking stitch and center the pattern in the remaining 49 (55, 61) rows. RC192 (210, 228).
6 • Transfer every other stitch and take empty needles to NWP. Knit 5 rows at MT and 4 rows at MT-2. RC201 (219, 237).
7 • Hang the first row of main yarn onto the needles in WP. Knit 1 row at MT-1.
8 • Cut the yarn leaving a very long tail. Thread bodkin with tail and remove the stitches with the yarn doubled. Gather as tightly as possible and knot.
9 • Mattress stitch the seam. If desired, make a pompom and attach.

Single Toque:
To make a hat with a single thickness in the body, cast on in 1x1 rib or mock rib and continue from #4 but omit #7. You can either pick up the first row during #4 to bring the empty needles into WP or when the hat is completed, slip stitch the cast-on to the inside along the last row of ribbing.

Tips:
The gathering at the top of the hat could be done with a cotton yarn if the main yarn is likely to break when pulled tight. Pompoms should be tied with a piece of wet cotton yarn which will shrink when it dries. This will hold the pompoms together through washings. In either case, the colour of the cotton yarn will not show in the completed hat.

Mid-Gauge:
This pattern is written for 3/12 yarns knitting on a mid-gauge machine to a gauge of 6.7 sts and 8.9 rows per inch. Suitable yarns are Nomis 3/12, Bramwell Roselan DK and Forsell Shamal DK. Set the tension dial to the correct tension for the yarn chosen. Slight differences in gauge are not important in this hat pattern.

The pattern is written for toddler, child/youth, and adult sizes (17.5, 21, 22.4"). With bulky yarn, an adult large of 24" can be knit with the same row count as the adult medium. The toques require 70 to 120 g. of yarn depending on size and type of yarn.

Doubled Toque:
1 • With waste yarn, cast on every other needle over 116 (140, 150) needles. Knit 8 rows with waste yarn and 1 row with ravel cord.
2 • COR. With main yarn, knit 4 rows at MT-2 and 4 rows at MT-1.
3 • RC000. Bring empty needles to B. Knit 56 (62, 68) rows at MT.
4 • Transfer every other stitch for mock rib. Knit 56 (62, 68) rows at MT-2. RC112 (124, 136). Bring the empty needles back to B position.
5 • Knit 56 (62, 68) rows for the body of the hat. Use the tension suitable for the stitch chosen. The body may be knit in stocking stitch with or without stripes, an all-over or centered fairisle, tuck or lace with the knit side as the right side. If using the purl side as the right side, turn the work before and after knitting the body. To center a pattern, knit 13 rows in stocking stitch and center the pattern in the remaining 43 (49, 55) rows. RC168 (186, 204).
6 • Transfer every other stitch and take empty needles to A. Knit 4 rows at MT and 3 rows at MT-2. RC175 (193, 211).
7 • Hang the first row of main yarn on needles in B. Knit 1 row at MT-1.
8 • Cut the yarn leaving a very long tail. Thread bodkin with tail and remove the stitches with the yarn doubled. Gather as tightly as possible and knot.
9 • Mattress stitch the seam. If desired, make a pompom and attach

Single Toque:
To make a hat with a single thickness in the body, cast on in mock rib and continue from #4 but omit #7. You can either pick up the first row during #4 to bring the empty needles into WP or when the hat is completed, slip stitch the cast-on to the inside along the last row of ribbing.
