SW #30 or 461 plus Key 4 to elongate

I have been knitting these dishcloths for years now, ever since they were discussed on the Compuserve Knit List. This is a copy of the instructions I wrote for myself and keep beside my machines. Each household in the family gets some of these dishcloths every year for Christmas and people order them in advance to give as their Christmas presents.

It seems that every time I find a favourite yarn for these it becomes hard to get so unfortunately I can not recommend a current one. I prefer to use a non-mercerized cotton as it is more absorbent. White is the best colour so that the cloths can be bleached. Adjust this pattern for the size cloth that you want and the yarn you use. I have recently used Yeoman Eco Cotton and it seems to work well for this pattern.

Brother 940 Version:
• RC000. E-wrap cast on over 60 (70) sts.
• Knit 1 row to the left, weave tail in. Hang the cast-on comb and weights for the first one only.
• Set to KCII and program the pattern to #461 elongated.
• RC001. Knit 1 row to the right. Push both the tuck buttons in and push the rubber wheels on the bottom of the carriage to tucking position.
• RC002. Knit in tuck for 30 rows.
• RC032. Release the tuck buttons and knit 4 rows in stocking st.
• RC036. Push in both tuck buttons.
• Knit 150 (184) rows in tuck.
• RC186 (220). Release the tuck buttons and knit 4 rows in stocking st.
• RC190 (224). Push in both tuck buttons.
• Knit 30 rows in tuck.
• RC220 (254). Set Change knob to N-L and release the tuck buttons. Knit 2 rows in stocking st. RC222 (256).
••DesignaKnit pattern: follow the steps for the Brother version to RC002. Set carriage to tuck and knit to RC256.

Singer Punchcard Version:
• With waste yarn and ravel cord, cast on over 60 (70) sts.
• RC000. E-wrap cast on with main yarn. Knit 1 row to the left, weave tail in.
• Memorize Card 7 or use Card 1 elongated. Knit 1 row to the right. Set the carriage to tuck.
• RC002. Knit in tuck pulling the needle opposite the carriage to D on each row throughout for a nicer edge.
• RC032. Set the carriage to knit. Knit 4 rows in stocking st.
• RC036. Set the carriage to tuck.
• Knit 150 (184) rows in tuck.
• RC186 (220). Set the carriage to knit. Knit 4 rows in stocking st.
• RC190 (224). Set the carriage to tuck.
• Knit 30 rows in tuck.
• RC220 (254). Set the carriage to knit. Knit 2 rows in stocking st. RC222 (256).

• To finish both versions: Leave a tail three times the width of the work and cut the yarn. Backstitch bind off. (This bind off matches the cast on and is elastic enough for the tuck stitches.) Or leave a tail five times the width for a row of slip crochet (doesn't match but it's faster). If making a quantity of cloths, work the bind off later. Knit 9 rows with waste yarn, 1 with ravel and start another cloth.
